Good Morning Everyone......

I wrote an article for both the OMRS Journal and also for here and I will be damned if I can find it now.......

Here is part of it:

Was reading the May 19th, 1900 copy of "UNDER THE UNION JACK, POINTS ON THE WAR NEWS" on page 669, I came across this.....

"The medal for the present South African campaign will be the most expensive and ornate issued by the War Office in recent years. The medal proper is a five pointed silver star with a gold center, surrounded by a ring of bronze, on which the words "South Africa" will appear in raised letters. In the center of all is a miniature of the Queen. The medal is the same size as the Khedivial Star. The ribbon is of four colours, a stripe of khaki in the center, two of white and one each of blue and red. There will, probably, be a bar granted for each important engagement."

Here is a photo of the medal that I was talking about that is in my collection.....

The reason I am adding this is that I have been sent a picture of a cigarette card that is for sale at Warwick and Warwick I did not know that this was available......

Mike,

I have had a copy of this cigarette card for some years and had assumed the medal was never produced.
But then, thinking about it, they must have had an example to work from to produce the card.

I am intrigued to know what you think your example is.
Is it a trial piece for the medal that was never given or a souvenir based on that medal?
Is there any evidence of suspension or a brooch mounting?

Neville

Hi Neville,,,,,,,

I think that it may have been a test piece ?????? I don't really know..... My search started over 15 years ago when I found a photo / print from a Canadian news paper and the man was wearing a medal for his service in SA.... I at first thought it was a welcome home piece.....Then I saw the piece that I have on sale on ebay..... Had to purchase it and that began a bigger search......
Take a look at this from BMF.....
