Pleased (hopefully) to say that I had the winning bid on the other QSA to a civilian, R. W. HARRISON, on ebay today.
I have searched very hard to find his medal roll, going through many, many rolls of clerks, officials attached to various units, etc, etc. Alas, to no avail!
Could anybody please help out with this? I am hitting a brick wall in finding out just who he was and what he did!
In hope.
Cheers Steve

Also tried the usual Ancestry, Findmypast, Familysearch.
The only RW Harrisons that come up all served with Australian units.

My guess is that the recipient was Conductor R.W. Harrison of the Army Ordnance Dept.

Harold Gadd should be an interesting recipient to research.

I always think that the “odd men” so to speak are always interesting.

In South Africa the Resident Magistrates and their staff (who also often progressed to becoming magistrates themselves) more often than not played a leading role in the various campaigns from the earliest Frontier Wars through to the Anglo Boer War. More often than not they were called upon to raise local units as through their official positions they were the first line of authority throughout the Cape Colony and Natal. As might be expected they came from distinguished and leading families and hence interesting stories of the individual and their families can often be unravelled.

Another medal recipient listed under the medal roll of the Attorney General Department is the following:

Single – QSA no clasp impressed D.G. Barry.

Dirk Gysbert Barry warrants a separate posting which has been concurrently uploaded to this Forum.
