QSA (1) Relief of Ladysmith (5602 Pte. J. Rothwell, R. Lanc: Regt.)

John Rothwell served with the Royal Lancaster Regiment during the Boer War and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Spion Kop on 24 January 1900. He died of those wounds at Durban aboard the Simla on 2 May 1900.

The medal to Private Rothwell just sold at Spink for a hammer price of £1,100. Totals (inc VAT on the commission for the UK only): £1,364. R26,400. Au$2,300. Can$2,030. US$1,580

1914‑15 Star, (2‑15110. Pte. A. Ferris. R. Lanc. R.);
British War Medal, (2‑15110 Pte. A. Ferris. R. Lanc. R.);

4643 Private Ferris (shown as J, not A) in the Boer War casualty list states that he was made a Prisoner of War at Vryheid on the 11th of December 1900, being released on the 4th of January.

His WW1 Medal Index Card states that he landed in France on the 27th of March 1915, served also as Private G1315 Royal Irish Rifles and that he was Discharged with a Silver war Badge.

KSA (2) (3435 Pte. J. Mannion. Rl: Lanc: Regt.)

John Mannion served in the Militia, before joining the King's Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment on 26 November 1891 at Newcastle-Under-Lyme, a hatter by trade. Having been discharged on 25 November 1903, he settled in Hyde and died in 1948.
