The military force was raised on 22nd October 1880 as the Sylhet Volunteer Rifle Corps by the British administration in India. In 1883 it became the Cachar and Sylhet Mounted Rifles with the motto "Non Sibi Sed Patriae" (not for self but for country, a common motto currently used by the US Navy!). Eventually on 13th August 1886, the volunteer corps unit was designated as the Surma Valley Light Horse with headquarters at Silchar, presently in the Indian state of Assam. It was disbanded along with all other Indian Auxiliary Force units in 1947, when India gained Independence.
