Hi Guys,

I am currently reading Brian Gardner's "Mafeking A Victorian Legend" and the author writes there were about 50 New Zealanders in Plumer's relief force.
Can anyone tell me what unit they were from as I cannot find any more information on them and I have never seen a QSA to a New Zealander with a RofM clasp.

Thanks

Nicholas

Perhaps more importantly, Vol. 1 of "Rhodesia Served the Queen" - dealing with the RofM from both North and South does not mention any specifically NZ contribution. Stirling says that the 4th and 5th NZMR disembarked at Beria at the end of April 1900 and were intended to form the 2nd Brigade of the Rhodesian FF together with the 6th NSWIB - but before Mafeking the Brigade was split up.
I suppose there would have been some New Zealanders enlisted in the various South African recruited units involved in the actual relief; the ILH for example.

IL.

Thanks Linneyl,

It must have been a mistake by Gardner. I always knew about the Queensland Mounted Infantry and the Canadian Artillery however I have never come across any information on any of the New Zealand Contingents being involved in the Relief of Mafeking.

Thanks

Sergeant-Major Edward Jollie, British South Africa Police, and Sergent Rupert Vivian Hosking, Protectorate Regiment, both Old Boys of Wanganui College School, were present at Mafeking. Jollie was the garrison paymaster. See pages 13-16 - issuu.com/masseypress/docs/our_20first_2..._20war_look_20inside
