QSA (4) Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Belfast (2711 Sjt. W. Beech. 2-Dgns.)

Official Replacement, issued 12 December 1923.

William Beech was born at Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire in 1885. Serving through the Second Boer War with the rank of Sergeant he was invalided on 6 June 1901. Re-enlisting during the First World War and entered the war in France on 25 July 1915, with the Northamptonshire Regiment. Having been discharged to the reserves on 20 February 1919 he wrote in to the War Office to explain that a fire had destroyed his home at Stilton, Peterborough on 19 August 1923 and he wished to have his destroyed medals replaced

George MacHardy was born in Banffshire, Scotland around 1867 and worked as a Ploughman before attesting for the 2nd Dragoons in February 1886. Seeing Home Service until November 1899 he was posted to South Africa for service in the Second Boer War with the rank of Lance-Corporal.

With this unit he was part of General French's attempt to relieve Kimberley and afterwards was involved in the fighting at Paardeberg and Driefontein. Promoted Corporal on 10 April 1900, MacHardy was with his unit during the Guerrilla phase of the war when they were split between various columns.

Promoted Squadron Sergeant-Major in February 1901 he held this rank for the rest of his career. MacHardy remained in South Africa until 8 June 1904 when he returned home and served here until November 1906. Upon discharge he gave his address as Govan, Glasgow

There is something definitely not right about this KSA!

Described as:

Kings South Africa Medal 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys), medal with clasps South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902, Impressed naming, “3666 PTE. M. LEAHY 2ND DRGNS:” Mounted with ribbon for the allied victory medal. Michael (Patrick) Leahy, from Ballynekill, Ireland attested for the 4th Dragoon Guards on 11th July 1890, he transferred to the Army Reserve in February 1898 and was recalled for service in South Africa on 20th December 1899. He served in South Africa with the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Royal Scots Greys), his Kings South Africa medal is confirmed on the medal roll as is his entitlement to a Queens South Africa medal with 3 clasps (Johannesburg, Cape Colony and Orange Free State).

Hello
I bought the KSA to Leahy as I have his India 1895.
What do you think is wrong with the medal?
The suspension mounting? Until I see it I wont know.

I think David's remark is a bit tongue in cheek because the KSA bears a Victory Medal ribbon.

It came in at £119, so I’m pleased with this. Just need to find the QSA
He wasn’t awarded an LSGC.
I’m now looking for QSAs to soldiers that were seconded from the 4th Dragoons.
Just found this KSA so plenty to look for
