This medal belonged to a Charles Eadly Napier, born 1874, from Weston Super Mare in Somerset. It is the Kings South Africa Medal - you need to be on the look out for the Queens South Africa Medal to the same man. He was awarded both for service in the Boer War as a Driver with the 20th Battery, Royal Field Artillery.

He joined the army in 1892 and his papers are available online through Find My Past at a cost. He saw service in the Cape Colony, Transvaal and Orange Free State and these are the clasps that would be on the Queens medal I referred to.

Charles also served in WWI and had the following children (his papers are available at a fee from Ancestry):

- Marguerite Annie born 23 may 1903 (Woolwich)
- Blanche born 23 February 1905
- Charles born 1 September 1907
- Stanley Edward born 23 October 1909
- Ellen born 10 December 1911
- Ethel Mary born 26 May 1914 and
- Harry Matthew born 3 July 1916

In 1911 (census) he was a Wine Butler in the Royal Artillery Mess at Woolwich

Regards

Rory
