David Thomas James attested into the South Wales Borderers. Advanced Corporal, he served in South Africa with the 2nd Battalion during the Boer War and was further advanced Sergeant. Awarded his LS&GC, he served during the Great War on the Western Front with the 1st Battalion.

Frank Richards Doel was born at Corsley, Wiltshire on 15 January 1877. He had originally served with the 3rd Battalion, South Wales Borderers (Militia) before enlisting full time into the 4th Battalion on 22 May 1891. He served in Egypt between 17 December 1892 - 15 April 1895 and then served in Gibraltar between 16 April 1895 - 17 January 1898. During this time on 22 August, he was placed in confinement as a result of being drunk and striking a superior officer, he was tried by DCM and was given 84 days and a £1 fine. Doel then served back at Home between 18 January 1898 - 12 January 1900 and during this time was placed on the Reserve but was recalled to the Colours on 18 December 1899. Doel served in South Africa between 13 January 1900 - 29 August 1902 before finally returning Home again on 30 August 1902.

He was married on 15 November 1902 to Elizabeth Edith Yerbury at Montpelier, Bristol and was finally discharged from the army on 21 May 1903.

He served as an ARP Warden during the Second World War and is likely to be entitled to a Defence Medal 1939-45.

Charles Henry Ruther was born at St.Mary's, Abergavenny, South Wales and attested into the 3rd Battalion South Wales Borderers at Brecon on 25 January 1895 serving until 25 January 1898. He joined the Regular Army on 26 January 1898 and saw service at Home from 26 January 1898 - 12 January 1900 and then served in South Africa between 13 January 1900 - 9 June 1904 before returning Home on 10 June 1904 until he was discharged on 24 January 1910.

With the outbreak of the Great War he re-enlisted at Newport on 15 August 1914, this time with the surname of Rutter. Rutter served in the Balkans and as part of the MEF from 4 August 1915 (dates differ) - 16 February 1916. He then served as part of the I.E.F. from 17 February 1916 - 10 October 1916. Rutter then served at Home from 11 October 1916 until he was discharged on 7 August 1917 as he was no longer fit for further service. This was as a result of Neurasthenia he suffered which had been from service at Kut, Mesopotamia beginning on 2 July 1916.

He is entitled to a Silver War Badge (124946).
