QSA (3) Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein (2867 Pte. J. R [sic]. Rayson, Yorkshire Regt.)

James Newman Rayson was born in Lutteworth, Warwickshire, in 1880 and attested for the Yorkshire Regiment at York on 8 April 1889. He served with the 2nd Battalion in India and Burma from 31 December 1889 to 30 January 1897, and transferred to the Reserve on 3 February 1897. Recalled to the Colours on 13 November 1899, he served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 24 November 1899 to 3 July 1900, and was discharged on 7 April 1902, after 13 years’ service.

Spink say approximately 116 ‘Kachin Hills 1892-93’ clasps issued to the 2nd Battalion, The Prince of Wales’ Own Yorkshire Regiment, the only British regiment employed during these operations.

William Carter was born in 1865 at Bedale, Yorkshire and enlisted in October 1887. He served in India from December 1889-October 1892, before proceeding to Upper Burma from 22 October 1892-26 March 1895 (Medal & clasp). Discharged in October 1899, he returned to the fold and served in South Africa during the Boer War from 7 March 1900-6 September 1902. He was again discharged in October 1903.

Harry Chandler was born at Cheam, Ewell, Surrey in 1876 and attested at London on 31 December 1894. Posted abroad for the first time he was posted to Gibraltar on 12 January 1898, returning to Britain on 22 March 1899.

Entering the war in South Africa on 24 November 1899 they saw heavy fighting at Paardeberg, with over 30 men killed and 100 wounded in action during the fighting. Chandler remained in the country until 11 September 1902 when he returned to Britain and transferred to the Army Reserve on 15 October 1902 and discharged on 30 December 1906.
