Jesse Sawdon was born at Christ Church, Hull in 1872, the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Sawdon of 12 George Road, Leeds. Attesting with the Yorkshire Regiment at Richmond on 24 September 1891 having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion. Posted to the 1st Battalion on 2 January 1892 and transferred to the 2nd Battalion in Burma on 29 September 1893. Remaining there until 17 January 1896 when he was posted to India, Sawdon was engaged on the Northwest Frontier twice over the next few years.

Returning to Britain on 29 December 1898 he was transferred to the Army Reserve on 31 December. Unfortunately he was not to enjoy a long break from military life, being recalled for service on 13 November 1899. Posted to South Africa on 24 November with 1st Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment he saw very heavy service there for the next two years being posted to the Depot on 10 September 1901 and leaving the country on 2 November. Returning again to the Reserve on 30 April 1902 he was discharged on 23 September 1903.

With the outbreak of the Great War Sawdon attested with the East Yorkshire Regiment on 15 February 1915 at Leeds. He entered the war in France on 13 July 1915 with the 7th Battalion. This unit saw action at the Battle of the Somme, Passchendaele, the Spring Offensive and the Hundred Days. Discharged on 24 February 1919 he returned home to 6 Halton Street, Leeds.

Warwick and Warwick say minor edge bruising, tarnished, about very fine. With 3 copied pages of service record, Herbert Louis Blackburn was born in Dewsbury, enlisted 14/1/01, served South Africa, India, Egypt and Sudan, discharged 13/1/13, clasps confirmed on papers.'

Owen Lee was born at Middlesboro, Yorkshire in 1878 and enlisted with the Militia at Richmond on 19 July 1899. Stationed with the 4th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment initially he was attached to the 3rd Battalion upon being embodied for service with the Boer War on 26 February 1900. Lee was confirmed as being on of 24 men injured in a train accident near Burghersdrp on 31 January 1902, despite this he remained in service for several more months before being discharged on 15 May 1902
