QSA (3) Relief of Ladysmith, Tugela Heights, Cape Colony (3163 Cpl. F. Foster. Middlesex Regt.)

Frederick Foster was born in Clerkenwell, London, in 1873, and attested for The Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment) in London on 26 February 1891. Recalled to Army Service under Special Army Order 11 November 1899, he served in South Africa with the 3rd Battalion from 2 December 1899 to 22 June 1900. Posted to the 4th Battalion upon return to England, he was discharged from the Army Reserve on 25 February 1903.

QSA (7) Tugela Heights, Orange Free State, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal, Laing’s Nek, Cape Colony, South Africa 1901, unofficial rivets between fifth, sixth, and seventh clasps (1141 Pte. J. Richbell. Middx: Regt.) number unofficially corrected

J. Richbell was born in 1867 and attested for the Middlesex Regiment on 30 September 1884. He embarked for India per Deccan with the 1st Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, on 19 January 1886, and later witnessed extensive active service with the 2nd Battalion during the Boer War; all clasps confirmed on the medal roll, which is further annotated by hand: ‘Chelsea 13/5/31’.

QSA (2) South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (5600 Pte D. Callahan. Middx: Regt),

Described as: D. Callahan is confirmed on the medal roll of the 2nd Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, having served in the Second Boer War, however his entry is almost entirely covered with detailed handwritten annotations. The ‘remarks’ column states: ‘Medal & 01.02 Issd. Off. E.C. Roll. Sentenced to 5 years penal servitude FG.C.’ and elsewhere is written ‘Medal & Clasps SA01 & 02 have been [lost?] by man. The clasps O.F.S. Trans & Natal will be issued after the Great War when the … … [?] replacement of lost medal & 01 & 02 will be considered. Man prefers this action. Medal Re-earned.’

The trio to Lt Col G R Rushbrooke sold yesterday for a hammer price of GBP 1,300. Totals (VAT UK only): GBP 1,674. R37,600. Au$3,290. Can$3,010. US$2,160.

Two of the single QSAs, one no clasp and the other with CC, sole for hammer prices of £60. All the single QSAs sold for sub £200 hammer.
