Joseph McCaw, a farm servant from Ballymena joined the Scots Guards on the 20th of February 1896 in London, after attesting in Glasgow on the 17th of that month, again, another typical Atkin's and a very colourful character, I'm actually quite surprised he managed to remain in the regiment's 1st Battalion to see campaign service with the Guards Brigade in South Africa, but, he did.

The original members of the Guards Brigade normally received both medals with the usual eight clasps and McCaw was no exception, the western front was no place for the faint hearted in 1899.
