From Liverpool Medals:

QSA (1) Talana (3811 Pte W. Hawley, 1st Leicester Regt.)

Severely Wounded on 30th October 1899 at Farquhar’s Farm.

William Hawley enlisted on 3rd August 1893. He served overseas in South Africa from 2nd January 1896 until 18th April 1901. He served at home until his discharge on 2nd August 1905, having completed 12 years.

On 30th October 1899 he was engaged in the Battle of Lombard’s Kop also known as the Battle of Farquhar’s Farm when he was severely wounded, by a gunshot to the right foot.

He was invalided home on 31st March 1901.

The medal with bar Talana was sent to him on 20th November 1900, as such it has very clear ‘ghost dates’ on the reverse, the roll mentions his “Defence of Ladysmith” clasp was sent later 'clasp only'

3866 Pte. S.E. Hudson, 1st Battalion Leicester Regiment.

Samuel Edward Hudson was born during 1874 in Oakham, Rutlandshire.

He enlisted for service on 7th September 1893.

His overseas service amounted to 6 years in South Africa from 2nd January 1896 until 12th September 1902.

Discharged following completion of his 12 years of service on 6th September 1902.

Frederick Palmer. Born 1875. From Hinckley, Leicestershire. Service papers available.

Entitled to CC and SA02. Served in the 3rd and 1st battalions. Lockdales list entitlement to SA01 but that is incorrect.

QSA (1) Natal (7254 Pte. T. S. Hobson. Leicester: Regt.), officially re-impressed naming

T S Hobson served in the Boer War with the 1st Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment and was invalided on 9 January 1900. His Medal & clasp was issued on 22 February 1905.

Naming not clearly listed by Warwick and Warwick.

Warwick and Warwick say 'With copied Boer casualty roll and SWB list, George Matthews was slightly wounded 7/9/1900 near Lydenburg, re-enlisted 14/9/14, discharged due to wounds 8/11/16.'

Described as:

Boer War silver tribute vesta match case with Leicestershire Regiment logo and engraved "Presented to Pte F. Rippon to commemorate his Patriotic Services in South Africa A.D. 1900-1901", several small knocks, about very fine. Frank Rippon served with Service Coy 1st Vol Bn Leicester Regt.
