Good Morning Everyone....

I have a few medals that were awarded to members of the same regiment and the unit name on the medal is slightly different....
The biggest reason is that one of the medals is a late issue.....

I have a pair that I am sure are to the same unit but cannot verify either one of them.....

982 PRIVATE T. NICHOLSON, 1-C (GRAHAMSTOWN) VOL., Cape Colony
and
1118 PRIVATE E. J. SMITH, 1st CITY VOLS., Cape Colony

Thanks in advance for your assistance.....

I don’t think they are the same. I have seen the Grahamstown Vols referred to as a collection of units back to the 1830’s.

The 1st City Vols were formed in the 1880’s.

I think they are seperate but the Grahamstown Vols also is used to describe the local units, and hence confusing.

It’s 6am and I have to go to work so can’t look it up but Tylden has an entry on both.

Hello Mike,
Yes, the same Corps, I would say that strictly speaking, the former would actually be the more correct of the two, but, in no way unusual, notwithstanding, the latter, is a little easier and quicker.
WO100/248, from which both were issued is titled "First City Grahamstown Volunteer" Regiment or Corps.
Regards Frank

Hello Mike,
Well, both are, in effect, named 1st City Volunteers, but, I assume it is actually Nicholson's medal is the late issue, I don't think I have any so named, certainly, from memory, at least, the only examples that I have would all be named Marshall's Horse.
