Hi,

I have been trying to find info on the recipient of this medal in all the usual sources but to no avail. I am usually quite good at the research side, am I being stupid here?

The QSA is to 6030 Pte A Symonds, Oxfordshire Light Infantry

The clasps are South Africa 1902, South Africa 1901, Transvaal, Orange Free State and Cape Colony.

Any help on this mystery (to me) would be extremely appreciated!

Thank you!

Firstly, welcome to the Forum. The medal roll entries for "6030 Pte. A.Symonds, OxLI" can be found on the rolls WO100/191 page 43 and page 126. The rolls are located in the RESEARCH category of this site. They can be a little difficult for a new member to find and search. However, the roll pages verify his entitlement to the clasps you mention. There are no marginal notes to assist you any further.
Have you tried one of the commercial sites to see if any personal papers have survived? One or other of the membership may beable to assist in that regard.
Regards
IL.

Interestingly, he is also on page 59 of WO100/335, but, his name has clearly been crossed out.

He is not listed in the Name Search as I have not made it to the OLI yet :(

You are in luck. His service papers have survived.

The papers are available from FindMyPast for a fee or free at the National Archives if you want to visit in person.

The index entry reports he was from Cowley St Johns, Oxford

Thank you for your welcome Linneyl and for pointing me towards the research area. Yes I definitely need to have a good look around the site to orientate myself! :) . I have been looking in the research area this evening (well, fumbling about really, ha ha) so I will try to work it out!

Your confirmation of his entitlement was great to read as I was beginning to wonder!
