And here are different naming styles on a double issue of QSAs:
(1) clasps Bel/MR/Paar/Dreif/Joh/DH/Rof K impressed in square caps to "167800 A-B A.E.Hutchinson, H.M.S. MONARCH"

(2) clasps Bel/MR/RofK/Paar/Dreif/Joh/DH impressed in serif caps to "167800 A.E.Hutchinson, A B , H.M.S. MONARCH"

Which one came first? I don't know either.

IL.

Good Afternoon Everyone.......

I have been thinking about the naming on some of these medals......
I would like to throw something out there for discussion.......

Could the small impressed naming on some QSA's be replacement medals issued/obtained after WW1 ??????

It seems to me that the small lettering is the same size as that used for WW1 medals......
Could they be replacement medals when the original sailor lost his kit when his ship may have been lost??????
And these are the replacement medals...... Saving his medals would be the last thing on his mind as his ship was sinking......

This is just a theory for some of the medals......

You raise a good point. I have heard of one example where a man lost his kit (including medal) when his ship was sunk in WW1, applied for a replacement medal - and later his original was found in his kit when his ship was salvaged. Sorry, cannot cite an example. Think it was on a dealers' list several years ago. I have often wondered how AB Hutchinson managed to get a duplicate QSA.
Quite a few RN QSAs have smaller, skeleton caps for naming. I don't think those are late issues. WW1 BWM naming is a little different.
I will dig out a couple of examples for comment.

To follow up on my previous, I attach pics of
(1) QSA no bar to "T.G.Lloyd, ????? HMS PHILOMEL" (TG Lloyd was apparently upset with his titles on his E@W Africa and QSA and filed them off.
(2) BWM to "170633 T.G.Lloyd, Sto 1 P.O."
Is the naming on the BWM the style to which you refer?

IL

Hi Linney........

Yes that is what I mean, it is slightly smaller than the Army / Colonial style of impression and closer to the size as shown on the BWM and Victory Medal that is why I am thinking that way.....

I would agree with Mike's hypothesis. Taking the Hutchinson pair shown, the top picture is the replacement medal, the lower medal the original issue.

IL - do you when Lloyd's QSA was issued or if it is a replacement?
