Leader Edward Bearcroft of the Natal Volunteer Ambulance Corps has joined the ranks.

Elsewhere on this site the antecedents of those who enlisted with the NVAC are discussed with the conclusion drawn that the rank and file were those who were either rejected by the more well known units as being worthy of scorn or were socially inferior in many respects.

Bearcroft is an outlier in this case being both a cultured and and educated man. An art and physics teacher he was written about extensively at the end of the last century where, in both Durban and Pietermaritzburg, he was for a time solely responsible for art in education in the Colony of Natal.
