S. P. Thompson was a Fitter with the Locomotive Department of the Natal Government Railways during the Second Anglo-Boer War. A remark on the medal roll notes he undertook 'Long hours + Extra work' during the war.

Noonan say 'Confirmed on roll of Cape Government Railways as a Fireman ‘working trains etc., within the theatre of war and services which assisted in the success of operations.’ He resigned his position on 12 February 1902'
