My Great Great Uncle Arthur Rogers (No 4047, 5th Lancers) has the Defence of Ladysmith Clasp and I have since discovered from his War Pension that in May 1900 he was in ā€œDā€ Squadron.

After reading the History of the 5th Lancers by W.T. Wilcox ā€œDā€ squadron were at the battle of Elandslaate although did not take part in the charge. From an earlier forum it was stated.

A clasp inscribed "Elandslaagte" will be granted to all troops at Elandslaagte on October 21st, 1899, who were on the right bank of the Sunday River and north of an east and west line through Buys Farm.

What I was wondering is would Arthur Rogers have been entitled to the clasp? I have only found him on the Defence of Ladysmith medal roll. Is it possible that his name on the Elandslaagte medal roll has become lost? Also, would the statement above exclude him from receiving the medal? I am not able to identify the region describe above on the map.

Regards

Simon

Hello Simon.....

I just did a check of our forum owners (David) book, Elandslaagte Account and Medal Roll and he is not listed there..... He is listed in FMP but only having the one bar DoL........

He may simply have been held up in Ladysmith by ill-health or some other unrecorded reason, so he missed the battle.

The roll (WO100/115p39) lists solely the DoL clasp.

There are a large group of people across the regiments represented at Elandslaagte that were not present through no reason that we know. I would agree with Brett that he was not at Elandslaagte, that he stayed in Ladysmith or did not go close enough to the battle to gain the clasp.

Kind regards

Thanks Guys
He's Medical record says he was in hospital for 28 days with a Contusion of the foot from the 18/05/1899 so maybe he wasn't 100% fit.
