WO100/130 clearly shows his number as 312 with the phrase "Lancashire Hussars" written underneath, one wonders if he saw subsequent service actually in the 32nd IY, notwithstanding, the naming is certainly interesting.

The issue of the medal is correct. There were no IY in the Natal campaign, he earned his clasps probably as a servant to Col Baron WC Gerard DSO (the "Lord Gerard" mentioned in the article?) also of the Lancashire Hussars who served as an ADC to General Buller.

"On Monday night last, February 18th, the people of East Sutton [St. Helens] showed once more their enthusiasm and patriotism in respect of the two volunteers who were called up, both of whom were employees of the London and North Western Railway at the General Stores and Sheeting Department, St. Helens Junction. The men belonged to Lord Gerard's Yeomanry of the B Troop..."

Another item from the St. Helens Reporter, February 1901; "Lord Gerard's Yeomanry" could perhaps have been a local, St. Helens, volunteer unit.

As to J. T. Moulding, I shall contact the Trafalgar Township Historical Society to find out if they also have his Ashton-in-Makerfield medal.

WO128 service papers on FmP are incomplete - just first two pages, but show discharge in November 1900 from 32 coy (Lancashire Hussars) IY number 9056 - he is not on the 32nd QSA roll. As he has clasps for CC, OFS and Belfast (Transvaal) - he could well have served with the IY. Lord Gerard received the same clasps as well.

Anyone have a Lancashire Hussars history?

LOL, well in that case, he did serve in the Imperial Yeomanry, to have been discharged from it, but, of course, as I originally mentioned, he may well have been in South Africa before it was formed, the Lancashire Hussars were extant before Christmas 1899, the Imperial Yeomanry force was not, but, quite frankly, I really don't think it matters, his medal was named from the roll it was issued from and is correct.

No doubt Moulding was in SA first before serving with the IY. If you look at his mate Fred Farmer's papers (again incomplete but 3 pages not 2) he was also discharged November 1900 from the 32nd coy. Critically written on the front page - possibly by Fred himself, it states was groom to Lord Gerard ADC General Buller.

If anyone is wondering the importance of the missing pages, the crucial missing page is one that shows appointments to units and dates of service in SA and remarks about that service.

They would certainly be very nice medals to have in any Anglo Boer War collection for the Natal Campaign.
