When French departed in haste to relieve Kimberley on 11 February 1900, the 9th Lancers formed a part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade taking part in the charge against the Boers at Klip Drift on 15 February 1900. Price was wounded the next day and invalided from service as a result.

QSA with Bel, MR, OFS, TR and SA01 clasps named to: 4292 Pte. J. B. Pierce, 9/Lcrs.

Pierce served in C Squadron and was wounded in action and taken PoW at Graspan on 25 November 1899.
He Later joined the South African Constabulary as 2912 Corporal J B Pierce and served in E Division.
He died of Enteric Fever (Typhoid) at Petrusburg on 15 July 1901. He is interred in Petrusburg Old Cemetery.
