John Stewart Ross was the OC of the ILH from 1925 until 1928, He was in the Scottish Horse with his brother Andrew (Alexander) and was a Lieutenant with the Transvaal Mounted Rifles in the 1906 Bambatha Campaign. He later went on to be a Company Commander in the ILH prior to and during WWI.
It was his little company of men who confronted the rebel Maritz at Prieska on the occasion where Maritz was shot in the knee and fled into German South West Africa.
He was in the Battle of Ellis Park during the Miner's Strike and received the VD for his long service. Sadly I only have his Bambatha and 1914/15 Star so if any one knows the whereabouts of the others I'd like to hear from you.
A full write up will be provided later - I am in communication with family members here and further afield all who have been most helpful.
Regards
Rory
