Hi, Everyone

I'm looking into the career of the above man, later Lieutenant Colonel Knatchbull, 2nd Leicestershire Regiment, who died of fever in Mesopotamia on 24 July 1917, while commanding officer of his regiment.

He served during the Boer War with his regiment and according to his obituary:

He served in the South African War, 1899 to 1900, taking part in operations in Natal in 1899, including the actions at Talana and Lombard's Kop; Defence of Ladysmith, including action of the 6th January 1900; operations in Natal (March to June 1900), including action at Laing's Nek (6th to 9th June); operations in the Transvaal, east of Pretoria, July to the 29th November 1900, including actions at Belfast (26th and 27th August) and Lydenburg (5th to 8th September). He was “Mentioned in Despatches” (London Gazette, 10th September 1901); received the Queen's South Africa Medal with five clasps, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (London Gazette, 27th September 1901): “Reginald Norton Knatchbull, Captain, Leicestershire Regiment. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa”.

I've been looking to confirm the 5 clasps he received for the QSA, which is repeated in many places, including his memorial plaque in Andover church, Hampshire, without any detail. I can't find the medal roll for him on Ancestry and most of the men in his regiment with 'Belfast' received just 4 clasps: ‘Talana’, ‘Defence of Ladysmith’, Laing’s Nek’ and ‘Belfast’. According to the regimental museum he received 2 clasps for Belfast! I can't figure out if the 'mystery' fifth clasp was a wrong double issue, or whether he was entitled to another clasp in addition to those mentioned above?

I suppose, therefore, my question to you is...what 5 clasps was the then Captain Reginald Knatchbull actually entitled to?

Many thanks in advance.

Mike

That's brilliant, thank you. I had noticed from the roll that perhaps a dozen men had received Cape Colony in addition to the other four clasps, while two or three had recived Orange Free State.

Many thanks for your help

Craig

I've downloaded the medal roll from TNA and indeed Cape Colony is there, albeit a late and rather faint addition. It would be interesting to know why Knatchbull and fellow captain Bryce, plus a handfull of OR received this additional clasp.
