What is a Humber medal?
On the back: The first cyclist to carry military dispatches in actual warfare.

This one is a shot in the dark; I think HUMBER was an early brand of Brit pedal cycle. Perhaps 1890's?
Good luck with your query.
Regards
IL.

I think IL is probably correct. Humber were making bicycles in the 1890's before becoming better known later for cars. It would be useful to see the other side of the medal, as it may have a Company symbol. In Humber's early days it was five figures apparently walking around the inside of a circle with the heads meeting in the middle.

Thanks, it could very well be 'just' a humber rememberance medal. Front side attached.
I have a photo of him with a bike, also stating 1898.
And/but he also got a 'real' medal, this website (and I asked there on the forum how that medal would like like):

It's definitely a medal from the Humber bike/company. The thing I find interesting, given the reference to his Boer medal, is that a British Company was recognising an event involving a member of the Boer forces. This suggests that the medal was awarded after the ABW and was intended as the commemoration of a key moment in the history of cycling, regardless of the background or allegiance of the cyclist. Alternatively, since bikes has been around for quite a while by 1899 I wonder if it relates to an earlier conflict in which Kleinenberg was involved. Perhaps somebody who knows more about Boer history than I do might have some idea about what the conflict might have been and what unit he might have been in?

It does relate to before the ABW.
I have a phone (a so called carte de viste) with the description:
John Kleinenberg 25 yrs Special Press cyclist despatch rider from Blaauwberg to Pbg Magato War 1898

I'm not sure if this Magato war is the same as the Malaboch war .....
But this one is more or less a year before the ABW
