John Hagan was born in Greenock, Renfrewshire, in 1870 and attested for the Scottish Rifles at Hamilton on 20 September 1888, having previously served in the Regiment’s 4th (Militia) Battalion. He served with the 1st Battalion in India from 19 September 1890 to 11 January 1899, and was promoted Corporal on 9 August 1894, and Sergeant on 29 March 1898.
He saw further service with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 23 October 1899 to 4 April 1903, and was promoted Colour Sergeant on 20 November 1903.
He was discharged on 19 September 1909, after 21 years’ service.
