Thomas Peak, a Costermonger from Clerkenwell, Middlesex, was born around 1873. He attested into the Scottish Rifles on 18 August 1890 and served at Home and in India. After a spell in prison for drunkenness on duty, he saw later service in South Africa during the Boer War with the 2nd Battalion from 23 October 1899 to 2 July 1902 before being discharged the following month.

Charles Joseph Lynch was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 4th (Militia) Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) on 6 February 1896 and was advanced Captain on 8 November 1899. He served with the 4th Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 1899 to 1901, including operations in the Orange River Colony, May to 29 November 1900, including the actions at Lindley (1 and 26 June), Bethlehem (6 and 7 July), and Wittebergen (1 to 29 July).

Advanced Lieutenant-Colonel on 19 October 1912, he saw further service during the Great War, with both the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and the Cameronians, on the Western Front from 4 December 1916, and was promoted Brevet Colonel on 3 June 1918.

A keen sportsman, he was Master of the South Union Hunt, one of Ireland’s oldest hunts.

John Newton was born at Uxbridge, Middlesex in 1870 and attested on 1 December 1890. He saw seven years of service in India prior to the Anglo-Boer War, arriving in South Africa on 23 October 1899 and serving until August 1902. Returning to Britain Newton saw three more months of service and was discharged in November 1902.

Walter Harry Hobbs was born at Wootton Bridge, Newport, Isle of Wight on 11 June 1879 and attested for the Scottish Rifles at Parkhurst on 3 May 1897. Appointed Lance-Corporal, he served with the Regiment in South Africa during the Boer War from 23 October 1899, arriving back in the U.K. on 8 July 1900. Transferring to the Army Pay Corps on 3 June 1901, he returned with them to South Africa on 16 January 1902, and was promoted Corporal on 3 June 1902; Sergeant on 3 June 1907; and Staff Sergeant on 2 May 1913. He saw further service during the Great War at the Command Pay Office, Rouen, from 17 August 1914. He was promoted Staff Quartermaster Sergeant on 2 May 1916, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order 125 of 1917. Appointed Acting Staff Sergeant Major on 8 February 1918, he was discharged on 2 October 1920, after 23 years and 153 days’ service.

Edward Christian Barnes attested for the Scottish Rifles and served with the 2nd Battalion in the ranks in South Africa, being present at the Battles of Colenso and Spion Kop, before being commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Bedfordshire Regiment in the field on 5 May 1900, in succession to Lieutenant H. D. Selous, killed in action. He was promoted Lieutenant on 16 February 1901, and transferred to the Indian Army on 12 December 1902.

Posted to the 19th Punjabis, he was promoted Captain on 5 May 1909, and served with both the 1/19th Punjabis and 59th Scinde Rifles during the Great War, being promoted temporary Major on 5 May 1916. He was still serving with the 19th Punjabis when they were presented to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales on his Visit to India in 1922.
