I'm researching this man, who died in 1918 in New Zealand while in service in WWI. He is listed on this site as a 'Civil Surgeon', with the reference for his QSA medal WO 100/226. Can someone enlighten me - what was a 'civil surgeon', and what does the medal reference mean?

Well, Major Google helped me answer my own question. With the wonders of technology, I am reading the Civil Surgeon QSA Medal Roll in National Archives now - all the while at my desk in New Zealand! Isn't technology wonderful.

So now I know from WO100 / 226 that Wheeler was a civil surgeon attached to 11 General Hospital. There's also reference to the 3rd Scottish Rifles, but as far as I can tell, the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) had only 2 Battalions. What was the 3rd?

3rd Battalion Scottish Rifles, was a Militia Battalion until 1908, it subsequently became part of the Special Reserve upon formation of the Territorial Force.
