Described as: Mayor of Kimberley’s Star 1899-1900, reverse hallmark with date letter ‘a’, lacking integral top riband bar and balls removed from points of star.

I find it difficult to understand why this is worth more than the scrap value. Even the suspension ring looks wrong.

An unbelievable price yesterday was for this 'a' hallmark Star.

It sold for a hammer price of £700. Totals (inc VAT for UK only): £902. R16,900. Au$1,540. Can$1,350. US$1,060



The previous month, Noonan's had sold this pair, containing a unnamed 'a' Star, albeit without its top riband bar for a hammer price of £380 (totals (inc VAT for UK only): £489. R9,200. Au$830. Can$740. US$570).

The Kimberley Star seen 3 months ago and missing the 5 end of point balls is available from Chester medals for £295.

Kaplan Auction have a late addition to their sale on 17 August, an 'A' hallmark Star without the top suspender.
