Sorry I know this is Boer war forum but people on here seem to know their way around military records & I need some help.

A friend has his grandfathers WW1 Military Medal & would love to know what he did to be awarded it.

Soldiers name is William Devon s/40157 Seaforth Highlanders, I've seen the actual medal & the original note from his commanding officer congratulating him on its receipt. However checking the medal rolls on Ancestry I can find no trace of it, his medal card just shows Victory & British Medals but also an earlier service number of 2746 as well as 40157

The London Gazette of 14th december 1917 announced the award.

None of the online lists I have found showing recipients list William Devon.

Any body any ideas where I can look?

Quite frankly, Great War MM's can be a real pain in the backside, the particular battalion's War Diary and local newspaper of the recipients home town often prove to be the way to go.

I would post on the Great War Forum or the British Medal Forum - you will find a regimental collector/researcher who can help you.
