That is a very nice example, I like the very bold prominent style of impressed naming, is the reverse a first type with the wreath next to the R in Africa with erased dates?

The medal, which is correctly named (see attached photos) comes with the Elandslaagte and Defence of Ladysmith clasps.

As to being discussed before - it's unlikely as the chap had bought it on auction a number of years ago and hasn't hauled it out of the cupboard since.

To answer Franks' question as to Type, herewith two "close ups" showing the ghost dates on the medal to Phillips.

Does anyone (Adrian Ellard) have a photo of the cemetery or memorial plinth to this chap?

That is exactly what I thought the reverse would look like, very nice, medals like this become important simply because they are, in effect, a memorial and very sadly, in so many cases, these days, the recipients marked grave no longer exists.
