Can anyone help put names to faces please? This is a picture of the Rifles from the siege of Mafeking.

Three of the men are identifiable. In the centre is Major Bryce Cowan and seated on the right is Dr W Hayes. Back right is Reverend Weekes.

The other three are unknown. Candidates include:

Cooke, Capt L G J S
Galbraith, Lt P T
Gemmell, Lt Hugh B
Hall, Lt Samuel J
McKenna, Lt John C X
Shipman, Lt A W
Shipman, Lt ED

Minchin, Lt SA is probably not in the picture.

With thanks in advance
David

Thanks, Shaun.

David Taylor's set of original pictures would be an amazing lot. He published some of these in his book Souvenir of the siege of Mafeking. Unlike the picture featured by Christies's (of the PRFF at Ramathlabama before the siege commenced) most of his pictures of small groups are unnamed which is a shame.

Thank you for looking.
David

Hi David,

The gentleman standing at the back left is very tall, I would assume over 6ft.

For some reason I thought it may be the Australian McKenna, Lt John C X who was killed in WW1 but I could not find any paperwork giving his height or any pictures of him at the Australian War Museum. I assume because he was fighting for a British regiment. I will carry on looking later.

Regards,
Shaun

Hi David,

I found this picture of CAPTAIN LIONEL GEORGE JAMES SMITH COOKE:

According to the reference below he was a sergt during the siege so I think we can rule him out.

**********************************
Maybe I am mesmerised by his moustache but what are your thoughts for Lieutenant P. T. Galbraith:
Mrs Sturgy says "no"....:(

Maybe other forum members could give their opinions; here are some of the photos of 2 others:

Shaun
