The gentleman below was a mate of Sergeant Edward George Ryde (or Ted/Bert), and his photo was found amongst his papers/photos on his body when he was killed going 'over the top' at Neuve Chapelle 10 Mar 1915. He is merely referred to as 'Tim' which is probably a nickname. This photo was taken at the wedding of Bert's Best Man, Henry Anderson, in autumn 1913. They were both sergeants in the 2nd Middlesex, and I think 'Tim' was too.

I was interested to see only a single bar on his KSA and three bars on his QSA. The other medal is a Long Service Good Conduct medal. Apparently there were only 11 single bar KSAs in the Middlesex.

I have a list of the NCOs in the 2nd Middlesex from the 1911 census so I'm plodding through 'testing' each name at Ancestry and MilitaryArchive to see if I get a good match.

So has anybody got any insight on this? Am I possibly barking up a wrong tree?

Cheers, Colin

Hello Colin

Ancestry will have the KSA roll so you can get all the single claspers from there and see if there is one that matches.

Ah, just had that argument on the Great War Forum!

This (courtesy of Andrew Upton over there) is an illustration of the KSA/QSA on orthochromatic film:

I was as surprised as anybody!

Yep, I'm trying to cross-reference the KSA roll with the 1911 census of C platoon (plus) at Guadaloupe barracks, Borden with the LSGD roll.

Nearest I've got is Maurice McGowan - got his LSGD medal, got three clasps on his QSA, but no trace of a KSA as yet.

Most of 2nd Middlesex were entitled to six geographic clasps and two date clasps on their QSAs and two date clasps on their KSAs. Maurice was in the 5th Middlesex and transferred with a different number to the 2nd Middlesex after the Boer War with whom he fought WW1. Interestingly he was a drummer for the QSA and the wedding photograph the 1913 photo of 'Tim' is taken from was for a Sergeant Drummer.

Cheers, Colin

They aren't a QSA & KSA; the "thickness" of the claps is so much greater than those of the ones for the Medals in question.
