Naming of the QSA to Henry Lethbridge Templer

In the Archives yesterday I found the report that Colonel J Nowers used, in part, for his Steam Traction in the Royal Engineers. It is a report written by Major Scholfield, RE.



There is a long narrative of 37 pages followed by detailed information in tables, eg by engine and month.



There are also graphs ..



Maps showing the routes of the Engines in South Africa. This is the section for Cape Town showing the steam engine route in red. I had not realised how few routes the engines traversed.



The report also contains detailed diagrams of the maintenance yards around the country, for example:

Here is another book which touches on this subject. It was originally written for the German Army but translated and published in 1900 with added appendices detailing the use of traction engines in South Africa. It includes some nice photos and drawings.

The book was reprinted by David and Charles in the 1970s.
