Hello, I an researching my family history and I'm a bit stuck on my Great Grandfather. What I know is that he was born in Ireland, served in the Boer war from about 1898, then moved to Halifax Nova Scotia immediately following the Boer War and was stationed at the Halifax Citadel. At some point before 1907 he was discharged from the army and remained living in Halifax. I have a picture of him in uniform on his wedding day (in Halifax Nova Scotia). I'm hoping if I can identify his uniform and regiment I might find more information about him and where he came from. I don't know if this would be the same uniform he had in Southern Africa. Any help would be gratefully received.

Hello Irishinboerwar

Welcome to the forum.
Is it possible for you to provide the forum with your Great Grandfathers name? Any extra details and clues may help with your request.

Regards

Dave.......
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

The collar badges look like flaming grenades, which suggests Royal Engineers or Royal Artillery. This is his home service uniform; in South Africa he'd have worn khaki.

Thank you for your response. Of course, My Gt. Grandfather was Edward Murphy and we know he was Irish, possible from Cork. My mother had a vague memory that he may have been born to Irish parents travelling in India. I have no sense of what colour this uniform is, as I don't know the uniforms!

If he was in the Royal Artillery, his home service uniform jacket and trousers in the photo would have been navy blue. In the photographic film used at the time, yellow often comes out as black, so he may have looked just as in this print.

In South Africa, he'd have looked more like this
