Silver cigarette case with oval enamel of a soldier firing a maxim mounted on a Dundonald Galloping Carriage. With hallmarks for Birmingham 1899, and maker's mark: "R.Bs" (Rolason Brothers). 64 x 87mm.
Lord Dundonald's Galloping Carriage for Maxim Guns was trialled in 1898. However, this 1899 case clearly shows the carriage in use in a South African setting, with kopjes in the distance. The soldier firing the maxim may be a likeness of Lord Dundonald himself.
