Hello Chaps,

So I wanted to share my resent find with you all. A simple badge and of typical South African sheet brass/wire loop construction with the letters MDF. My speculation is that this is for the Malmesbury Defence Force. But to be honest I really don't know, due in part to the fact that I have never seen, heard of, or can find any reference for an example.

As always, your comments and thoughts would be most appreciated…...a rare find or something else?

Cheerio,

Roy

Roy,

Thank you for sharing this. It certainly looks contemporary.

It follows the style of Steinaecker's Horse. angloboerwar.com/other-information/16-ot...ormation/1887-badges

It will be interesting to see if anyone has seem similar.

Cheerio,
Hi djb,

Thank you for that. I'm suspect the lack of response is indicative of little or no knowledge (and or examples) available on this subject. For now at lest I'm going to tentatively attribute this to Malmesbury, at least until I know better. I do find these obscure badges/units a fascinating are to collect, despite any lack of available date.

I did not respond to your post, because I had nothing definite to write, except to be sceptical about the connection to Malmesbury. Much of my library is now dispersed, so I cannot check my next suggestion, which is Mashonaland or Matabeleland as possible alternatives to Malmesbury.
Regards
Brett

As a keen title collector, I often have this sort of problem. A delve through the indexes of badge books sometimes throws up an answer. In this case the Defence Force is probably right, but which town ? Tylden lists a Matatiele District Defence Force. You will never be happy until you have confirmation.
Good luck
Mike

Hi Gents,

Thank you for your input, always appreciated.

I know such badge are always going to be somewhat of a mystery, but then again I don't have a problem with that. Just raising the topic is always good and who knows perhaps one day the mystery will be solved. For now it's just another interesting badge to enjoy and add to my small collection.
