Hi Gents,

In regards the Kimberly Scots Rifle Volunteers glengarry badge (Owen 195) I note that the description indicates that this badge was worn from 1891 - 1899 (ending the same year as the ABW started).

Would it be correct to say that this unit was not active during the Boer War and therefore this badge was not worn during this conflict, or do I have that wrong?

Cheerio,

Roy

In his book on South African regiments, Major Tylden records that the Kimberley Scots existed between 1890 and 1893, so they were not there for the Boer War

Kimberley Scots amalgamated with the Victoria Rifles to form the Kimberley Rifles.

Kimberley Rifles amalgamated with the Diamond Fields Horse on 6 February 1899 to form the Kimberley Regiment.

The Scots "ancestry" remains evident, though, as the Kimberley Regiment badge is based on the star of the Order of the Thistle.

Hello Arthur,

Thank you for that, most interesting.

Just to clarify; I have recently been offered the badges mentioned in my fist post, a very hansom badge indeed and quite tempting but as it now appears quite out of my ABW area of interest, I suppose I will have to give it a miss. Such is the dilema of collecting..!

Cheerio,

Roy
