Hi, this is a bit of a long shot but my great grandfather, John T Baston, was a gunner in the RHA in the Boer War. He went back in 1905/06 for garrison duties.

He was also an acting corporal in the ASC in the First World War but I wasn't aware he went abroad.

I recently came across these photos of him (on the left in both) in uniform. I think they are later than the Boer war especially as he has corporal stripes but wondered if anyone could identify the car or the tropical uniform.

Identifying the car will be a good way to give you a range of dates for the photograph.

Good luck!

Actually I think this thread should be in the uniforms and equipment forum. Is it possible to move it?

Standard British Army kit of the WW1 period.

Best try a dedicated vintage car forum and a WW1 forum to translate the letters on the bonnet.

I think I have solved the puzzle. On re-reading his service record he was promoted to acting corporal in June 1918 whilst serving with the ASC/Expeditionary Forces Canteen (EFC) in Italy. Someone on another forum think the car may be a Lancia Theta which would fit the date and place.
