Herewith is a 28mm medallion bearing the head of QV on the obverse with the legend "British Transvaal War 1899 1900" and the reverse bearing the figure of a mounted bushman with rifle slung; drawing his horse to a sudden stop. The legend "Good Luck to Australian Bushmens Corps" and the date 1900 are around the edge of the mounted figure. These medallions are reasonably commonly found here in Sydney in bronze gilt and silver and I did hear of one such in gold. Supposedly struck by Stokes of Melbourne. Prior to Federation in 1901, several Australian colonies despatched contingents with the term "bushmen" in their title. It would be reasonable to think that this medallion would have found resonance right across Australia.
The illustrated example was found many years ago by the lady friend at a church fete and, together with a gilt QV 1897 Jubilee medallion and an old slip of red/white/blue ribbon, was mounted on a very old safety pin. At some time it probably had a special meaning for someone.
Regards to all
IL.
