Wonder if there is any connection to the name on the lid, perhaps not, you know I have not been down to the market at Camden for years, always got off the tube at the Angel, there used to be a lot of stalls and little shops that sold silver, makes you wonder just what else is out there.

Frank,

I agree. It's a great shame that so much silver got melted down in the 1970's when someone tried to corner the market. Probably many cigarette cases and snuff boxes went that way.

Best,

Justin

Hi Justin,

I recently acquired Foden's QSA, miniature medal, CIV swagger stick, and brass slouch hat badge together with the small silver badge shown. This is inscribed 1895-6 Pte W Foden Class II D Company 2nd VB Beds R. Do you still have the snuff box and did your research throw up any useful info? I did find one photo of Foden. I would be very interested in buying or trading for the Snuff Box.

Regards
Paul

Hi Paul,

Foden will also have been the recipient of a compass like the one below. These were presented to men of the South African contingent of the 26th Middlesex V.R.C. on their departure.
Presented by their commanding officer, Major Liles.

This example belonged to 1224 Private F.W. Wheeler, City Imperial Volunteers.

Inscribed: "26th Mx (CYCLIST) V.R.C. / SOUTH AFRICA 1900. / Corpl F.W. Wheeler / from / Major C.E. Liles". 42mm diameter.

Paul,

I'm sure you've seen this photograph ("City Press" C.I.V. Souvenir No. 2), showing Foden and Wheeler standing side by side.
