Greetings
I have collected a gold rail watch that was presented in March 4th 1903, to LT EE Jones, by his man after he was wounded in battle on the 8th October 2001 in South Africa during the AngloBoer war. There is an engraving on the back of the watch referring to the above. I traced through the website LT EE Jones participation on the KFS and him getting wounded. I wonder if they are any more records of LT EE Jones or his family history?
He served with Kitcheners fighting scouts in 1901-2
The engrave states :

PRESENTED TO
LT E.E.JONES
BY N.C.O's & MEN, OF HIS TROOP AS A TOKEN OF ESTEEM & REGARD WARM BATHS SI MÁRCH 1903

Welcome Aris,

His forenames are not recorded on the medal or nominal rolls. He joined the South African Constabulary after the Boer War so I suggest contacting Rhino Research (see Contacts in the top menu) as they have access the SAC records. That may be the easiest way to track him down.

Good luck
David

Wow, what an incredible piece of history you have! That gold rail watch is a remarkable artifact, and the engraving adds so much to its story. The fact that it was presented to Lieutenant E.E. Jones by his men after being wounded in battle makes it even more meaningful. It's amazing that you were able to trace his participation through the KFS (Kitchener's Fighting Scouts) and verify the details of his injury.

According to the Palmer Casualty roll, "Lt. E.E.Jones of KFS" was Slightly Wounded near Heilbron on 4th October 1901. My copy of the Boer War Services of Officers publication shows Lt. E.E.Jones as being with 2nd KFS. Stirling's "The Colonials In South Africa" (and where would I be without his book?) tells us that on 4th October 1901 in the ORC, Col. Wilson's Column was marching from Kroonstad to Heilbron when it was attacked near the Rhenoster river. In driving off the enemy, the column lost 4 killed and six wounded; including Lt. E.E. Jones (severaly wounded). It must have been a pretty stiff fight.
Thus, I would expect your Lt. E.E. Jones to appear on the medal rolls for 2 KFS. Have a look at WO100/257 - and beware the chance that his initials MIGHT be incorrectly shown.
Good luck with your research.
Regards
IL.

Aris - According to the Belfast Newsletter of 10 October 1901 the first "E" on your watch stands for Elliott:

The way I do it, looking for somebody called Jones on medal rolls is a thankless task but looking for somebody called Schnadhorst is almost certain of success. Thus I have now found LT E E Jones on two medal rolls for the 2nd KFS. Looking for somebody called Elliott Jones throws up a third medal roll which shows he joined the South African Constabulary on the 6 March 1902 and thereby earned the King's South Africa Medal as well as the Queen's.

Poking around on Ancestry I am pretty certain the second "E" stands for Edward and this is him in a nutshell:

More to come not only about Lt E E Jones but also Lt F G Schnadhorst who died on 22 October 1901 from the wounds he received on 4 October 1901. In this case the F G stands for Frank Gladstone and he was born in Birmingham, England. First I need to do some more research.

Regards, David

PS any chance of some photos of the watch?

PPS by pure chance I will be driving through Llandovery tomorrow.

PPPS having written this I now realise your original post was nearly two years ago and perhaps you have already learnt the above from Rhino Research.
