Does anyone here have any idea what this medal/badge is?

Were these given to Red Cross personnel as a recognition of service in South Africa, perhaps by a particular district? Or were they simply fund-raising badges?
The single year, 1900, might suggest the latter. But, then, I have only seen two in forty years of collecting, which would be surprising if they were sold at a national level.

The medal is only 26mm across.

Neville,

An interesting item.

I see Morton and Eden sold one of these in 2006, describing the item as 'gilt and enamelled Red Cross badges (2), one stamped PICKSLAY & CO SOUTH AFRICA 1900.'

Charles Pickslay (1848-1910) established Pickslay & Co and were based on 5th Avenue, New York c 1900.

Thank you David,

The above example is one of the two Morton & Eden medals you mention.
The New York attribution suggests I might have been searching through the wrong newspaper archive ..... Though some badges, like many of the pin-back lapel badges, were manufactured in the US for the UK market.
