Hi,

I have found on-line at East Bristol Auctions upcoming Auction on the 17th December 2021 of Military, History & Transportation - Medals, Edged Weapons, Uniforms & Ephemera, a Tribute Medal / Fob that I have not been able to locate on this forum.

Unfortunately it is not attributed to any serving soldier, but I believe that it may be of interest to other members (or at least Neville) and hoping that someone out there might be able to shed some more information about this award. The opening bid for this medal is £180.

Information accompanying the Tribute Medal / Fob is as follows -

A 1901 18ct gold and enamel hallmarked fob medal 'The Bristol 2nd Gloucestershire Volunteers' of the Royal Engineers. Hallmarks to rear for Kemp Brothers, Birmingham, 1901. Enamel decoration to front, with a central ' RE ' in red and white enamel. 11.2g gross weight. Housed within an associated period box.

Thank you for posting a picture of this interesting medal.
Dated 1901 to a unit which served in South Africa, I would think that is quite strong evidence to suggest that it is a tribute to their Boer War service. Is its absence from the tribute medal database due to the lack of any specific reference to South Africa on the medal itself? (at least I couldn't see it under G for Gloucestershire or B for Bristol)
I suppose this leads to a broader question of what is the definition of a Boer War tribute medal for the purposes of the database. If the medal itself is ambiguous, is documentary evidence also required?
Perhaps a question for Mr Chamberlain.
Thanks.

Hi JC,
I wasn't able to find any relevant information about this tribute medal/fob either when I originally posted these images. I'm hoping that maybe one of our contributors with access to the relevant online digital papers will have luck in locating an award ceremony that can link this medal to soldiers of the Gloucestershire Volunteers.
