My great-grandfather, William Douglas Butler served with the Natal Police and then the Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa. He was born and raised in England, then went to South Africa, met and married his wife and had his first child there. The family of 3 then immigrated to Canada and went on to have 4 more children (one being my grandfather). William also served in WW1.

My IY CD shows Lt. Butler, W.D. serving in South Africa with the 36th (West Kent) Coy of the 11th Bn., Imperial Yeomanry. In the listing of IY officers, he is shown as having the temporary rank of Lt. in Army from 24th January, 1902. That ties in with the date on his Discharge certificate from the Natal Police.
Thanks for posting those pics. The one featuring Officers and NCOs of the 36th Coy is beautifully crisp!
Regards
IL.
