Only three medals were made, presented to Privates Michael Crossan, John Dryden, and Robert Milligan.

Ex-Provost Cowan, Kirkcudbright, has generously presented a handsome silver medal to each of the men who have volunteered from A Company Galloway Rifles for active service in South Africa - Privates Crossan, Dryden, and Milligan. On the one side is an inscription, with the name of the Volunteer, bearing that it has been presented by ex-Provost Cowan on his volunteering for active service in South Africa, January, 1900. On the other side is a beautiful representation of the Old Tolbooth, with the clock (presented to the town by ex-Provost Cowan) and the ancient Market Cross. The gift is one that the men will cherish and be proud of, and it was a thoughtful and kindly act of the ex-Provost to remember them in such a way on the eve of their leaving for the front. The medals, which are enclosed in handsome cases, were despatched to Berwick on Monday. Mr M'Skimming, watchmaker and jeweller, St Mary Street, executed the order, which is creditable in every way to him.

Dumfries and Galloway Standard, Wednesday 7th February 1900

Has anyone ever seen or heard before of these medals?

I have never seen an example, interestingly, Crossan, now thirty three years of age, had actually served in the 11th Hussars and was a member of the Galloway Rifle Volunteers before joining the Army, again, at Berwick in January 1900, he went on to serve in South Africa until the 27th of November that year with the King's own Scottish Borderer's,.

Have never seen one in person but they are listed as Item C11 ( Page 124/125) in Hibbards book along with a photo so there must be some out there somewhere..... Hibbard also states that there is only one left in existence rarity R4....

I wonder how they can know for certain that the other two no longer exist.
