I am doing research into the great grandfather of my wife. He was in the Fourth Battery of the Royal Field Artillery 1st Division. They left England on 15th November 1899 for service in South Africa.

Hello Mike,
I presume that you want this for your list.
His Name was George Henry Oatey, the number we have for him is RA 25044 but I also noticed that the number 25044 shows up as someone else perhaps the RA makes a difference, do you know?

Best regards
Stephen

Good afternoon and welcome,
WO372 shows Oatey as being commissioned and actually attaining field rank during the Great War, so not a man without talent, I would, if I were you, search the indexs in WO339, you should find his officers file at Kew, unless, he contiued to serve beyond 1922.
Kind regards Frank Kelley

Thank you Frank we will research further. We believe that he reached the rank of Major before he retired but obviously we need to dig a bit deeper. Once again thank you and also for your quick response. we will keep you informed.

Kind regards
Stephen

Hello Stephen,
Yes, he was a Major, if he served beyond 1922, the Ministry of Defence will have his file.
Kind regards Frank
