Thanks Dave, really appreciate the info. I think the 2nd J J Flood is the one. The fact John Joseph, William and Charles all were in the Natal Mounted Rifles matches up. All 3 brothers served in multiple regiments, was this common? My great grandfather Wilfred Charles was only in the E Cape to my knowledge

Lastly do you know where I can get medal records? On a facebook group I’m part of someone was able to do this for Charles Flood and I’d love to be able find these myself.

Brother's serving together was reasonably common in certain regiments for sure. Do you have a Ancestry account? If yes, search the military section and look for the medal rolls under U K Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls 1793 to 1949. You can fine tune the search by adding the regimental service number and regiment name.

Best wishes

Hi Dave yes I have an active Ancestry account. I didn’t realise you could search military records. I just thought you used the standard search function. I’ll try and work it out.

Thanks again

To help explain the multiple regiments: the constitution of Natal specified that Natal forces were for the defense of the colony and not to be deployed outside the colony. When the time came in 1900 to pursue the Boers into the Transvaal, the Natal Mounted Rifles, Natal Field Artillery, etc. could not do so. Many men switched into other units, including the Natal Volunteer Composite Regiment, 505 strong, which was specifically raised to fight outside of Natal.
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

Thanks for explaining, love hearing new info. Makes sense why some of my relatives joined the Natal Volunteer Composite Regiment then. All 3 brothers, like their father who fought in the Crimean War and Indian Mutiny, obviously liked a bit of a scrap.
