Good afternoon. I have joined the site in relation to my grandfather, who served in the Boer War 1901-02 with the 20th Mounted Infantry under the command of Guy du Maurier, Uncle of the famous author, Daphne. My grandfather enlisted with the Royal Fusiliers at the age of 17 on the 4 October 1899 at Dalston Barracks, east London, having previously served a year with the militia (5th Royal Fusiliers). He went on to serve at the hill station of Darjeeling in India between 1904-07 before finishing his first term of engagement on the 3 October 1911. He reenlisted with the Royal Fusiliers on the 5 September 1914 and served for practically the whole of the Great War - and was wounded twice - in France, Belgium, Salonika, Egypt and Palestine, and awarded the Military Medal towards the end of the conflict. I have written a book about his life which I will make the subject of a topic on the forum presently. I am a retired police detective and now pursuing writing as an occupation.

Welcome to the forum Paul. I’m sure the detail in your book is very interesting and perhaps the forum members can add something new.

Thanks Mike, the army, in common with officialdom generally, struggle to spell our surname correctly!
