Hi All

I am from New Zealand & new here just trying to find out some more information about my Great Grandfather John Patterson. I am not sure if anyone could help but giving it a try. I am finding it hard to track things down about him. He was born 1874 in Cavan Ireland and died 1919 in Belfast. I have a picture of him in the Royal Irish Fusiliers, and subsequently managed to get some of his records from the museum. He received a couple of medals with clasps Cape Colony, Transvaal, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith. 1901 & 1902.
I unfortunately am not military minded & really can't understand much of what is on them. His death notice said his funeral was "with military honours" and my dad recalls being told that his coffin was carried on a gun carriage through the streets to Milltown cemetery.

Hello Muzzy69

Welcome to the forum
This link gives a brief history regarding your Great Grandfathers time in South Africa with his regiment
www.angloboerwar.com/unit-information/im...oyal-irish-fusiliers

Also a couple of sheets of information from his attestation papers which you may find useful.

Dave.....
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Muzzy69 - I like the photo of them all displaying their Kings & Queen's South Africa Medals. I note on the FT you have created on Ancestry you appear to have identified your Great-Granfather as third from the right in the middle row.

The info supplied by Dave F shows he previously served in the 4th (Militia) Battalion of the Royal Irish Fusiliers. His 3 December 1890 Militia attestation papers can also be found on Find My Past - you will note that on this occasion he was economical with the truth regarding his age. You will also note his service/regimental number changed when he transferred to the regular army.

Above is the first and most interesting of the three pages.

He can be found on medal rolls on Ancestry - do a military search and put his service/regimental number 4168 in the Keyword box and he should come out top two - one for his Queen's Medal and the other for his King's Medal. You should be able to attach both to his profile in your FT.

Regards, David.
