Good day all,

I think this is the intro thread. Arrived here from researching a naval officer - Commander Charles Reynolds Sharp, who died in our village (St Tudy, Cornwall) in the 1960s. Rumoured to have been a WWI submariner I was given the task of researching further as I'm a retired submariner. Discovered he had served as a midshipman in 1899 and been present at the Siege of Ladysmith. I am able to correct medal roll table on this website which lists his ship as HMS TERRIBLE, but his naval documents list HMS POWERFUL as his appointed ship.

Hello Ian,

This might be of help.

Midshipman Charles Reynolds Sharp's grandson, Gerald Sharp, published Reynolds Sharp & Edward Chichester's Ladysmith diaries & letters in 1976.

ISBN 0 356 08346 2

Reynolds Sharp photographed on board the Submarine Holland 2, in 1904.

Thank you - the books will be most helpful. Midshipman, later Commander, Sharp’s naval documents are almost indecipherable!

Neville,

Thank you for your help - I managed to obtain a copy of Gerald Sharp's book and it has proved very helpful. Still on the same tack I'm now trying to locate the purchaser of Charles Sharp's QSA medal with Ladysmith Clasp. It was auctioned at Spinks in around 2011 (possibly by Gerald Sharp or his family?) along with a considerable archive of material. It is the archive I'm interested in as it covers Sharp's submarine experiences in the very first Royal Navy submarines. However, Spinks has no record of who the purchaser was - merely that the lot sold for £4,800.

Any thoughts or direction you could provide would be most helpful.

Thanks

Ian W

Ian,

Unfortunately, I can't help you with that one.

I purchased Sharp's annotated copy of Kisch & Tugman's "The Siege of Ladysmith in 120 Pictures" back in 1986. This came from Gerald Sharp (via a York bookdealer). I'm not sure whether this was when the rest of the archive was originally sold by the family.

Neville
